5/1 and 5/2 (Wednesday and Thursday)

We left Wake Forest at about 11 am and headed towards Atlantic Beach. It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive to the condo and along the way we purchased some sausages at a placed known by Wayne for exceptional meats. The price was less than half what we pay in California for similar products. They had pork neck bones with meat attached so I bought some for the dogs. The cost was only $1.30 for about six bones. In addition, I bought some beef soup bones that the dogs love to chew on. These too were about $1.20 and in California we would pay triple this for the soup bones. They also sold great pimento cheese, a delicacy that Earline loves.

Next we stopped at King's Barbecue to sample authentic Carolina barbecue. I was glad that I order small plates for me and Earline as they were quite large. The barbecue is shredded, smoked, slow-cooked pork with a tangy vinegar sauce, not a red sauce commonly found in Texas style barbecue. This comes with two sides and "hush puppies" that I had never tased before. Everything was delicious.

We arrived at the Atlantic Beach condo at about 4 pm and relaxed on the second floor porch with a great ocean view and sampled some wine. Earline and I took the dogs down to the beach but these Chihuahua breeds had no interest in getting their feet soiled by walking on wet sand. We carried them along the shell studded beach until we returned to the condo for total relaxation. We had stopped at the Food Lion and purchased fresh shrimp and asparagus and cooked this for a great meal.

The following morning, we cooked sausage sandwiches that Earline calls "Uncle Willie's" for breakfast, and later in the morning we drove to Buford, NC and explored the downtown historical area. It is a small seaside town with a lot of charm. Leaving Buford, we stopped at Captain Jim's Seafood in Morehead City and purchased some fresh flounder that was just off the boats. The plan was to make fish and chips for dinner. With iced fish in our cooler, we headed back to the condo where chef Wayne was ready to show us his cooking skills.

After a great fish meal with wine, we watched some episodes of Bosch until everyone crashed for the evening.
