Sunday 5/5/19 - Cinco de Mayo and transit to Cave Spring, GA 522 miles
We got on the road at about 8 am. Google maps said the travel distance would be 477 miles and it would take about 7 to 8 hours. This estimate was way off. It would take us about 10 1/2 hours to transit from Wake Forest, NC to Cave Spring, GA. The main reason for this was heavy rain, the first we have encountered since leaving California. This heavy rain created hazardous condition and there were several accidents on the opposite side of the road but "lookie loos" on our side created slow traffic.
We made it to Asheville, NC by about noon and stopped at "The Wicked Weed", a dog-friendly brew pub for lunch. This was a nice rest until it began to rain again on the outdoor patio. The umbrellas were barely adequate but we did manage to finish our meal before continuing our journey to Cave Spring. We arrived at about 7:30 pm and were treated to wine and a meal of venison and potatoes. Earl shot the deer last season on his 40 acre property. He purchased his house and land for about $380k, an unheard of price to us from California. This is making me rethink where we should relocate. Perhaps and place in Cave Spring area might not be so bad?
Earl and Bonnie's home is a two story log home with a basement. They are in the process of having the inside wood sealed with polyurethane and thus the vapors are still present. Earl and Bonnie have been staying in their travel trailer down by a small lake on their property and they graciously gave us the use of their trailer while they slept on the couches in their basement. This is the kind of people that Earline's brother and sister-in-law are.
After a bodacious amount of wine, we staggered to the trailer to listen to the frogs at the pond serenade us to sleep.
