On Monday 5/6/19 we decided to go to nearby Rome, GA to check out the town and to have a lunch and a beer. 600px-Broad_Street,_Rome,_GA_Nov_2017

The history of Rome, Georgia extends to thousands of years of human settlement by ancient Native Americans. Spanish explorers recorded reaching the area in the later 16th century, and European Americans of the United States founded the city named Rome in 1834, when the residents of the area were still primarily Cherokee, before their removal on the Trail of Tears to Indian Territory. The competition for resources among its diverse inhabitants led to both innovation and strife. Its location at the confluence of three rivers enabled Rome to develop as a crossroads for trade and transportation. The city was later designated as the county seat of Floyd County, Georgia. Today, Rome is the largest city in Northwest Georgia, and is a regional center of healthcare, education, and manufacturing.[1]

The name of the city was chosen by lot. Suggested names were placed into a hat and the name Rome was drawn out.

We quickly discovered that hardly any store is open on Sunday or Monday. This was good in that the women could not shop much and bad because our favorite beer places were also closed. In any event, we were exploring the main street that had historic buildings and we entered one that was interesting. We had a conversation with an attorney named Floyd Farless who claimed his family came over on the Mayflower. Regardless of the truth, Flody was entertaining and gave us interesting history of the town and how almost every first floor was flooded in 1886.
