Wednesday, 5/8/19 Cave Spring, GA to Russellville, AR 577 miles

We left Earl's house in Cave Spring, GA at 8:20 am and headed west towards Santa Cruz. We decided to head west using I-40, similar to the way we came east. From Cave Spring, we headed to Birmingham, AL before turning northwest to get to I-40.

Birmingham is a terrible city to drive in. There is a lot of road construction going on and by following my Garmin navigator it took me into a loop. Earline was using Google Maps and it wanted to exit to a tiny city road. Later, we did need to go on this small road to get to I-65. This small road was littered with trash and garbage and was disappointing to see how the Alabamans treated their city.

Leaving Birmingham, I told Earline it felt like rain and it wasn't until we hit Memphis, TN that rain began. For the rest of the transit to Russellville, AR it was pouring down and made driving difficult. All along the way we saw evidence of recent river flooding that was not there two weeks previously.

There was an hour time zone change and we pulled into the Russellville La Quinta at about 4:30 pm. It was nice to use my Wyndam points to get a free night's lodging for 15,000 points. The hotel is nice but there were not dog friendly restaurants nearby so Earline went and brought back hamburgers for dinner.

Tomorrow we head west on I-40 towards Winslow AZ. We are 1848 miles from home in Santa Cruz, CA.
