Patagonia Adventure 2018

AIRLINES AND WEIGHT CONSIDERATIONS
Stacks Image 3
We were responsible for our own international air travel. I chose to use Delta Airlines as the price was reasonable and I trust them more than United Airlines. I didn’t want to get dragged off the airplane against my will. The cost for a round trip was $1354.16. This was slightly higher than a round trip to and from Santiago, Chile, however, we needed to fly into Santiago and out of Buenos Aires.

Enchanting Travels includes all of the airport transfers except for the transfer from Buenos Aires to the EZE international airport. This is a long ride from town and the cost for a taxi is about $69 US. We have a friend, Dante Proaño, who does airport transfers. We met him when we went to BA for our honeymoon. He speaks English very well and provides safe transfer for $60 US for a maximum of two people. Dante’s Airport Transfers

Delta allows one carry-on plus a personal item and you can check one bag 50# (23 Kg) or less free.

The major weight limits of concern are on the within country flights in Chile and Argentina. We mostly will fly on Aerolineas Argentinas, but we are also traveling on Sky Airlines or Latam Airlines.

We were initially told by the trip coordinator that Sky Airlines only allowed a 5 Kg carry-on weight. This would have been of great concern as I did not want to trust checking my photography equipment and computer which would exceed these weight limits. I then went to the Sky Airlines webpage and found this information was in error and that we could have the following:

SKY AIRLINE
Carry-on luggage is one piece, and must fit the following dimensions: 35 cm x 25 cm x 55 cm (14in x 9in x 22in); this includes the pockets and wheels, up to 20 kg (44lb) you should put it away in the overhead compartments.

Additionally, you can carry one of the following personal articles and must fit the following dimensions: 35 x 30 x 15 cms (9in x 11in x 5in), which you must put away under the seat in front of you (unless you are seated in the first row or in an emergency exit; in such case, you should put it away in the overhead compartments)

AEROLINAS AIRLINE
For domestic flights, you are allowed 1 piece of carry-on with overall dimensions of 115 cm (45 inches) and not exceeding 17.6 pounds (8 Kg) that will go in the overhead compartment. The website does not mention a personal item. For the checked baggage, you are allowed 1 piece not to exceed 15 Kg (33 pounds). This is 17 pounds less than you are allowed on the Delta international flight. If you exceed the weight limit, it will cost 650 Argentine pesos = $33 US dollars per luggage piece. Since we will have two flights with this airline during our adventure, it is best to know this, avoid the excess baggage fee and then spend the money on wine. :)

LATAM AIRLINE
You are allowed one carry-on piece of luggage not to exceed 17.6 pounds (8 Kg) which is the same as Aerolinas Airlines. The dimensions are the same as with Aerolinas (115 cm or 45 inches.) equipaje_maleta_enYou are also allowed one personal item than can fit under the seat (a purse, laptop bag, etc.) I am now assuming that you can also bring this on Aerolinas Airlines as well. The dimension os this are 18″ x 14″ x 8″ . Notice that this is greater than the dimensions allowed by Sky Airlines. You can also bring the following, free of cost: A jacket, an umbrella, a small camera, a pair of binoculars, something to read (books, magazines, tablet) or a small duty free bag.

SUMMARY
So it appears that one should not exceed 17.6  pounds of carry-on to be safe from excess baggage charges. It also seems that if you can put an item under the seat in front of you, that this should be fine with all of the airlines, although Sky Airline’s dimensions appear to be much more restrictive than the others. For checked luggage, it seems that if you have 33 pounds or less, then you should not experience excess baggage charges.
