      Stout of Argentina
A stout is made with dark roasted malts which results in a dark color and a roasted malt flavor. In mainland Europe they are usually termed "noir" (black). The word stout means strong, and was applied to strong Porter in the 18th century - most typically by Guinness, who were one of the few breweries to continue making such beers into the 20th century. Guinness is today the template for Irish or Dry Stout. Other stout variations are Imperial Stout, Foreign Stout, and Sweet or Milk Stout - as well as Porter, Imperial Porter, and Baltic Porter - and the related Mild and Schwarzbier.

Today is just a day of transportation from Club Tapiz to the Mendoza airport. It takes about 1/2 hour to get to the airport and the driver was a kind of wild and crazy guy who knew a lot of shortcuts.

The flight to Buenos Aires is about 1.5 hours and we were met at the airport by a driver arranged through Enchanting Travels. We had a seamless transport to our Palermo district hotel, the Hotel Clasico. This is a quirky 32 room hotel located at 5480 Costa Rica.

The desk clerks were very helpful throughout our two night stay and breakfast is included. However, our second breakfast was a bit curtailed because a big storm during the evening made their ovens inoperable. The elevator of the hotel has murals painted on the walls that you can see as the elevator ascends or descends.

Enchanting Travels describes this hotel as follows:

"Hotel Clásico is a boutique hotel located within the chic Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo Hollywood. The hospitable staff are happy to share with you the porteño (local) style of fashion and arts! Stay in one of the property’s 32 rooms, and experience handmade furniture, hardwood floors, luxurious Egyptian cotton bedsheets and premium amenities. If you wish to work out, the hotel can arrange a visit to a nearby fitness center. Feast on deliciously fresh and modern cuisine at the in-house restaurant Möoi, with culinary creations by celebrated chef Jessica Lekernman."

Now what you get is a nice room with a tiny bathroom that leaked water from the shower because the door would not close. The hardwood floor looks like recycled lumber with gaps. I saw no premium amenities. The bed was comfortable but the room was extremely noisy from traffic and late night crowds.

Earline and I know Buenos Aires fairly well as we had our honeymoon there and I spent a moth there with my brother about 10 years ago while Earline had to work...poor baby. It is a city similar to many European cities with many things to do.

There is a wool district that Earline was interested in visiting. The last time I was in BA, I purchased a lot of wool to bring back to the USA. You can find where it is located on my previous Buenos Aires blog. BA Blog We walked to this area but found that the wool prices had increased greatly and you can almost buy it for the same price in the USA. We didn't buy any and started walking back to the hotel. This was when we found the streets to be very confusing. The streets just sort of stop with a building in front of you and later we found out that they start up again several blocks distant. I had lost our map when I pulled out my cellphone to use the calculator and we didn't have cell service to use Google Maps. We must have walked every street in the area before finally going to a coffee shop to get WiFi for directions.

We were interested in going tango dancing in the evening and met with an old friend Dante, who does airport transfers and acts as a tango taxi dancer for single women who need a partner for tango milongas (that is what a tango dance event is called.)

If you ever need a reliable ride to or from Ezezia International Airport, contact Dante. He speaks perfect English and is reliable.

On Friday night, we had dinner with Dante and then went to the Salon Canning that has one of the better milongas in Buenos Aires. You need to reserve a table in advance or you won't have one. The entrance fee is $50 pesos per person ($2.50 US).

We got out of there at about 3 am and returned to Hotel Clasico where sleep was difficult because of the outside noise. On Saturday, Earline and I wanted to go downtown to explore a bit. You can get there by subway but you have to purchase a sube card.

We elected to use Uber. It is easy to use in BA just as it is in the USA. The cost from Palermo to the obelisk downtown was about $8 USD. We took a nice walk around Florida Street which is a great pedestrian avenue. We also found Pizzaria Guerrin on Corrientes Avenue. This place was recommended by our Uber driver and I must say it was extremely popular with the locals and serves great Fugazetta pizza (Caramelized onions and mozzarella cheese).

After walking for about 5 miles and having little sleep the night before, we Ubered back to our hotel and crashed for the evening. There was a severe thunderstorm during the evening and on Sunday morning, we wanted to go to a bookstore to see if we could purchase a small book recommended by our guide in Bariloche. This is a humorous book on Argentine slang, called Che Boludo. The problem is that most bookstores are closed on Sunday.

e never found an open bookstore and since we had to be back to the hotel by 2 pm for airport transfer, we aborted this attempt. We did however, have one last meal of fugazza pizza (thin crust) and a dark beer before we left the area.

We made it to the airport and then settled in for a 14 hour airplane ride back to Atlanta, followed by transit to San Francisco! I will make one final blog post in a few days to summarize this trip and note what we thought was good and bad about this adventure. Maybe the summary will help you decide on your own trip should you decide to travel to Patagonia and surrounding areas.
