Currency Exchange

One of the things to think about is currency exchange for use during the trip to Chile and Argentina. Both countries use a Peso but with different exchange rates. Currently, the Chilean Peso (CP) is about 600 CP to $1 US. The Argentine Peso (ARS) has a value of about 19.5 ARS to $1 US.

I went to Chase bank to get some CP’s since we are flying into Santiago, Chile and has most of the first day and evening for ourselves. I purchased $98.55 US and received 54,000 CP instead of 59,565 CP which is the current rate of exchange on the internet. The Chase bank charges a premium of 9.3% for their exchange service. For whatever reason, they do not exchange $US for Argentine Pesos (ARS), so I will have to wait until we arrive in Argentina to obtain this currency.

My Chase debit card charges me no fees for taking currency from an ATM for up to five withdrawals per month. You should not use a credit card for withdrawals as there will be still charges incurred.
